How to Choose the Right Diagnostic Tool for Your Shop

Fri, September 04, 2026 5:12:49 PM By Tom Burke

A diagnostic tool should make your shop faster, sharper, and more profitable. If it slows technicians down or fails to cover the trucks in your bays, it is the wrong tool.

Use this checklist before buying.

Start with your vehicle mix. List the truck makes, model years, engines, transmissions, brake systems, and equipment types you see most often. Do not rely on general claims. Match the scanner to your actual work.

Next, define the systems you need to access. Engine diagnostics may not be enough. Many shops need transmission, ABS, DPF, SCR, body controller, trailer, and medium-duty coverage.

Then decide how deep you need to go. Reading codes is basic. Professional shops may also need live data, system tests, forced regens, parameter checks, troubleshooting information, and advanced service functions.

Review the hardware. Make sure you know whether the purchase includes a laptop, tablet, adapter, cables, chargers, software, and setup support.

Confirm the subscription terms. Ask what is included, how long updates last, what renewal costs, and what happens if you do not renew.

Evaluate support. This is a major differentiator. A scanner without support leaves your technician alone when the tool will not connect or the software does not behave as expected.

Finally, think about return on investment. If a diagnostic kit saves a few outside diagnostic fees, prevents one avoidable tow, or helps a technician solve issues faster, it can pay for itself quickly.

The right tool should fit your shop’s workflow. It should help technicians move from code to cause to repair with less guesswork.
